UV Mapping & Unwrapping
A UV map is a flat 2D version of the surface of a 3D model that is used to fit (or wrap) textures. The UV map is created after the 3D polygon model is created. The name given to the process of creating a UV map is "UV unwrapping".
Since there is no such thing as a 3D texture, UV unwrapping allows our 3D artists to create a 2D texture that developers can use to wrap the texture around objects.
