JFK in 3D
KJFK Airport was one of our first major hubs to be added in 3D. Since that time, the way 3D airports are built has continued to evolve to allow greater detail without consuming more resources. This comes in the form of custom 3D object models and improved textures.
JFK was built when airport best practices were still being implemented. This means that it contained unnecessary structures and 3D appearances that was a hit on performance. Editors also (very creatively) used some hacks to create arches and other shapes that are no longer supported. The airport was too detailed and contained too many polygons. So when the time came to add more Jet Bridges, it was too much.
We’ve learned so much since v1 of this airport that a full rework was required. Editors are now getting closer to having a finished product, however between editing and reviewing for accuracy this isn’t a fast process. We’re excited to share this important hub with you when it’s complete. Until then we’re sharing a work-in-progress screenshot.
We’d also like to say a huge thank-you to our dedicated editing team, the reviewers and airport moderators. Your hard work is enjoyed by thousands of pilots every day. Special thanks to @Levet, @ECoops123, @DeerCrusher, and @LordWizrak for their assistance with this post.
