A350 Behind The Paint
With our older aircraft, our 3D artists projected the texture from the left and right sides of the aircraft. This was a quick way of applying textures; just using one side, then the other for projection. Another projection would sometimes include the wing box fairing (the area of the belly between the wings) since that area is usually almost flat. This process also allowed them to make the livery 10 times faster.
Now, with the newer models our artists project the texture as a cylinder around the body of the aircraft. This allows them to paint on the top and bottom of the fuselage as well. The disadvantage to this is that we need more space on the texture. It’s for this reason we use multiple textures instead of a single texture like we used to use before. This makes creating liveries more challenging and time consuming since our artists now paint in a cylindrical way.
