The ATC Schedule returns with a twist

The ATC Schedule returns! On October 18th an ATC Schedule will be published on the community forum which lists 3-5 airports in various regions of the world each day. The ATC schedule is a great resource for pilots to plan their daily routes, overnight long-hauls, and jump into the action. Featured airports will change daily at 0600Z, though the weekends will often offer the same airports Saturday and Sunday. Different than before, the schedule will no longer include a map of highlighted regions or featured airlines/themes. In addition, the schedule will now be posted for the entire month, rather than weekly, to allow for advanced planning, both for community event creators and ATC.

With no highlighted regions on the ATC schedule, IFATC members will have the freedom to staff any airport in the world at any time, along with the daily airports on the schedule. Previously ATC would be required to staff all featured airports first before having to choose an airport within the highlighted region which can be quite restrictive. By combining the old and new we can offer a predictable service for pilots at featured airports while also consistently staffing those fan favorites like LAX, SFO, LHR, and more. This hybrid ATC system also allows controllers to continue staffing community, VA, and ATC events without being limited by a schedule or daily regions.

You win some, you lose some

In May 2021 the IFATC team looked ahead to the future, dove into the deep end, and launched an ATC Region Assignment system that placed controllers in global regions of their choosing. While this change introduced a global ATC presence, more controller autonomy, and more event opportunities, it also removed the critical ability for pilots to predict where ATC would be and some of those exhilarating action-packed moments at a busy airport.

Sometimes changes can be a great way to reveal what is needed… and most importantly, what’s not. The community’s feedback was critical in helping shape the way ATC staffs airports. Thanks to that feedback we’re now looking ahead to the future, combining the best aspects of the previous ATC schedule, the best aspects of the region assignment system, and introducing a hybrid of the two as we continue our journey to offer the most engaging and immersive flight simulation experience on a mobile device!

IFATC members may request assignment in any region of the world, regardless of their own physical location, and must complete 30 days in that region before they’re eligible to transfer to a new region. There will be no limitations on transfers (if eligible), number of members per region, or what frequencies are staffed within those regions if the controller holds the appropriate rank for that frequency. A controller assigned to a region will never be asked to relocate and may stay in their local or preferred region permanently! Controllers will be exempt from the region assignments every Tuesday and Friday as we offer the freedom to open anywhere in the world on Tuesdays and support the official Friday Night Flight (FNF) on Fridays.

What does this mean for you?

Our Infinite Flight pilots can now expect to see IFATC staffed around the world on the Expert Server 24/7. This program will offer a more sustained global presence, allowing our controllers to become familiar with region-specific procedures. Initially, controlling procedures will stay the same but we hope with time that controllers will be able to increase the level of realistic services you might expect when flying to different parts of the world. Pilots and controllers alike are encouraged to really dive into the most unique and diverse airports their region has to offer. Of course the HUBs of the world will regularly be staffed, however the possibilities are now endless as we discover new destinations off of those familiar airports.

How will I find ATC?

The primary driving force behind traffic location will be the Infinite Flight Community Forum #events category, and engagement between the ATC and pilot community. Controllers will be encouraged to staff all community events and work with our virtual airline (VA) community to provide the most coverage possible for their scheduled flights. You can always see which airports are staffed from the Infinite Flight home screen’s airspace activity board! After we implement this new program, you’ll also begin to see more official events similar to our Flash Flights with a greater emphasis on ATC. These spontaneous ATC events allow us to highlight the efforts of various regions, and allow pilots to practice a new procedure, explore a remote area, and even spotlight one of our many virtual airlines!

A note from the ATC Manager: The new region assignment program transfers a great deal of influence and control from the official ATC Schedule to the pilot/controller communities. Let’s meet this challenge with positivity, find creative ways to engage with one another, and let’s create a global air traffic ecosystem as we pursue a new level of realism!

Building Infinite Flight’s ATC Schedule

Now it’s time to build! The schedule’s map is built using mapchart.net, while the airports and schedule information is put into a staged forum topic. I always create the schedule with the last few week’s schedules open in a separate tab. This allows me to ensure the regions I plan to choose for the upcoming week are not repetitive or featured on the same days. While I try to feature the US and Europe on each schedule due to these being our audience’s primary locations, I’ll still try to work in a region, theme, or airline that steers ATC to unique areas. The scheduling frequency of underserved areas is based entirely on engagement! I encourage you to challenge yourself to fly in and out of airports you wouldn’t normally choose when they’re staffed.

Once a region of the world and airline is chosen for a specific day I begin checking to see how many available aircraft can be flown on Infinite Flight with that particular carrier. Carriers represented on more than one aircraft or variant often generate more traffic and opportunity for unique destinations. For example, choosing to highlight Germany and Lufthansa opens up routes for anything from the CRJ to an A350! The airport possibilities are endless and the goal is to provide plenty of short, medium, and long haul opportunities.

How do I choose which airports are featured? I use a mix of FlightRadar24, IFC Route Databases, and Wikipedia to determine suitable airports serviced by that airline. The most used resource is Wikipedia which offers a full list of airlines and their destinations for any airport in the world. This information allows me to select unique airport pairings to regularly introduce new routes. Another key factor when choosing airports is their geographic relation to the most popular airport, or HUB, for that day.

For each day of the schedule I’ll typically select about 8 airports which will offer options for Infinite Flight Air Traffic Controllers (IFATC) while also leaving some freedom if they’re all staffed on a busier day. IFATC has also expressed a great appreciation for days where they can choose their own airports. I will regularly schedule ATC choice themed days in various regions of the world. Not only is this fun for the IFATC team but it also provides us with great data to see what our community wants most when presented with a day to call all of the shots! Lastly: schedule review!

Once the schedule has been created I will review all airports to ensure they have been edited in the sim and contain things like ground markings, and parking locations. I also check to make sure they have ATC frequencies, and have the correct ICAO identification on the schedule. You can always find the latest schedule pinned on the Community Forum each Sunday!

Infinite Flight Violation Levels

Starting in 20.1, our violation system will be more automated. Restriction times and access to the Expert Server will be based solely on the nature of the offence, and won't be chosen by ATC. Violations will be received based on severity and indicated as level 1, 2, or 3. Words like report or ghost will be a thing of the past.

Violation Level 1

Level 1 violations are system-generated and will be received if a pilot violates a specific set of parameters on the Training and Expert servers. Examples of this are ground overspeed while taxiing, flight overspeed, aerobatics inside an airspace, and runway idle. Exact details will be available on our new online user guide coming soon.

Receiving three or more Level 1 violations will disconnect the pilot from the server, causing them to have to start their flight again (which they can do immediately if they choose).

Violation Level 2

Level 2 violations are tied to infractions pilots can receive by Expert Server ATC (IFATC) when rules are broken. Unlike the previous system, IFATC must select an exact rule that has been broken in order to issue the violation. The pilot will be notified of the violation on screen, and will be disconnected from the server. Options at that point will be to visit the user guide, continue their flight while disconnected, or end the flight.

Pilots receiving level 2 violations may return to the Expert Server immediately provided their total number of level 2 and 3 violations remain below server limits. Examples of level 2 violations include pushing back or taxiing without permission, failure to maintain adequate separation, and newly added, unresponsive while climbing, descending, or maneuvering.

Violation Level 3

Level 3 violations are similar to level 2 but are more severe. The pilot will be immediately disconnected from the server, again with the option to fly offline. Level 3 violations carry a 7-day wait period before being able to use the expert server again.

Level 3 violation examples include taking off from or landing on the wrong runway, flying through other aircraft, and not following assigned ATC heading, altitude, or speed.

Violations are kept on a pilot’s record and therefore, if a pilot continues to receive Violations (Level 2 and Level 3 only), Expert Server access will be restricted for longer. Currently a total of no more than 5 Level 2 and/or Level 3 Violations can be received within a 365 day rolling period for access to the server. For example, if a pilot receives their first level 2 or 3 violation on June 1st, and over the course of 365 days, receives 4 more level 2 or level 3 violations, they must wait until the first violation has lapsed on May 31st of the following year before rejoining. Provided they haven't accumulated any more level 2 or level 3 violations, this would mean their count is now 4 for that 365 day period.

The overall changes and the introduction of the Level 2 violation are designed to help ease the burden on the pilot for making an honest mistake, hopefully avoiding a 7-day restriction from the Expert Server. We encourage each pilot to review our user guide, tutorials, and other available resources to improve anything that may have resulted in a violation.

How pilots know they've received a violation

Pilots who have received any type of violation can still finish their flight offline! This is nice if they were not planning to fly with a group and would still like to practice. Alternatively, they can end the flight and head to our user guide for some help brushing up on the rules.  The community forum is a fantastic place to ask questions too.

Existing reports

What happens if a pilot already has ghosts/reports/violations on their record? All violations will become Level 1 and all pre-20.1 ghosts will become level 3 violations on the pilot's record. Existing reports and violations will not be reset.

Grade table improvements

Grades in Infinite Flight determine what server a pilot is able to join based on experience, violations, violation to landing ratios, and so on. By tapping on their username from the home screen, followed by the info icon next to their grade, pilots can easily see their current grade, and requirements to reach the next one. On this screen, developers have made it easier to see your violations and other useful stats that contribute to your grade.

In version 20.1, 2-year server restrictions have been removed entirely to allow pilots to regain access more quickly. A new Violation History section will show all previous violations with the reason for easy reference should a pilot forget why they were issued or when.

Appealing violations

Controllers are human and mistakes happen. It can be very frustrating indeed when a pilot is removed from the server after a long and otherwise successful flight. We encourage pilots to stay calm and follow the process to have their violation reviewed (for level 2 and level 3 only). The violation history log will show the time and date, type, reason, and controller's username. Armed with this information (and whenever possible, a link to their replay file), pilots are encouraged to visit the Infinite Flight community forum to send the controller a message.

Here's how to appeal your violations

1. Head to the Infinite Flight Community Forum and create an account if you don't already have one.
2. Send a Message to the @appeals  user group using the violation appeal template. This template will include the date, time, reason for the violation, controller name, a link to your reply file, and any extra information that will help.
3. Give our review team up to 72 hours to issue a response.

The Infinite Flight violation system is designed to help pilots and controllers ensure the Expert Server is a place everyone can enjoy their flight in a professional environment. While coming up with a perfect system may seem impossible, these changes should be a step in the right direction.
